Dr Richard Cook

MB ChB DCH MRCGP Birmingham 1989 (Senior Partner)

Dr Cook graduated from Birmingham University in 1989. He worked in Australia and on the south coast before completing his GP training in Hurstpierpoint. Following this he travelled widely before returning as a Partner with this practice in 1998. He enjoys the day to day aspects of the job and is the practice finance and Commissioning Lead for the practice. He is married to Clare, also a GP, and they have three children and a dog to keep life busy and interesting. He enjoys food, sport, music, family life and more food.

Dr Simon Purwar

MRCP MRCGP DRCOG London 1992 (Partner)

Based in Hassocks, Dr Purwar trained at Oxford University and Guy’s Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1992. He joined the Practice in Hassocks in 1999, and he is the Prescribing Lead. He is married with two children and enjoys the outdoors and indulges in a number of sports including volleyball, cycling and swimming.

Dr Joanna Thomson

MB BS MRCGP DRCOG DFFP London 1997, Partner and Trainer

Jo qualified from Kings College School of Medicine and Dentistry, London, in 1997. She joined Mid Sussex Healthcare in 2002. She is married to Sean, an Orthopaedic Surgeon and has two children. She has a keen interest in Women's Health and Palliative Care. She enjoys all aspects of General Practice, particularly providing continuity of care to patients and their families. Since her sabbatical in New Zealand in 2009 Jo has learnt tennis and has taken up jogging (no marathons on the horizon just yet). She also loves gardening and when not at work is likely to be found in wellies with a hoe in her hand.

Dr Candida Lewis

MB BS MRCGP DFFP London 1994 (Partner)

Dr Lewis qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1994, and initially worked in London, before gaining a place on the GP Training Scheme at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. She joined the practice in 2003, after spells living and working in Cape Town and Christchurch, New Zealand. She has a special interest in women’s health, is married and has a son. In her spare time she likes to run (slowly) and sleep.

Dr Hugo Wilson

MB BS MRCGP DRCOG BSc PGCE London 1997, Partner & Trainer

Dr Wilson trained at Guys and St Thomas' Hospitals, qualifying in 1997. Following this he undertook his GP training in Cambridge and Brighton. He started at Hurstpierpoint in June 2006 and has an interest in Medical Education. He is GP Training Program Director for Mid Sussex, overseeing the education of GP Trainees across the area, and Supervisor to GP Trainees during their 3 year course. He is also a GP Appraiser, supporting qualified GPs in their educational progress and careers. Within the Practice he leads on Research and IT as well. Outside of work he enjoys mountain biking on the South Downs, tennis, running, and playing guitar in a local band. He is married and has 3 boys.

Dr Terry Lynch

MBBS MRCGP MRCP BSc PGCE, Partner and Trainer

Dr Lynch trained at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, qualifying in 2001. After working in London and Surrey he completed his GP training in Guildford before starting at Hassocks in July 2008. He is a GP Trainer - supervising qualified doctors in their final stages of training towards becoming fully fledged GPs. He enjoys outdoor pursuits and tries to keep fit on an indoor rowing machine. He is married with two children.

Dr Asmerom Seyoum

MD 1988 Addis Ababa University, (Partner)

Graduated from University of Gondar, Ethiopia in 1988, after graduation Dr Seyoum worked in Eritrea before moving to the UK. Completed his GP training in Judges Close Surgery in East Grinstead. Ash enjoys running and is married with two children.

Dr Helen Graham

BSc MBBS (UCH London 1989) DCH DRCOG MRCGP PGDipDerm (Partner)

Dr Graham trained at University College London & Middlesex Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1989. Prior to joining MSHC, where she is Educational Lead, she was a Partner in a Brighton General practice. She enjoys the variety and the continuity of care which makes General practice such a great medical specialty. Her particular interests are Dermatology, Medical Law & Ethics and Medical Education. She is married with 3 children and enjoys running on the South Downs.

Dr Miriam Winn

MBBS MRCGP DFFP DCH DRCOG (Partner)

Based in Ditchling, Miriam grew up in Sussex, qualified from St Georges Hospital Medical School, London, in 2004 before coming back to the area to do her junior doctor jobs in Brighton and Haywards Heath, where she then joined the GP training scheme. Before joining us Miriam worked as a GP Partner in Worthing. She has a special interest in palliative care and women's health and also enjoys the variety that General Practice offers. She particularly values continuity of care and getting to know her patients well. She lives with her husband, two daughters, son and lively labrador. When not at work she enjoys walks on the Downs and baking.

Dr Isabel Konrad

MRCGP DRCOG DFSRH (Partner)

Based in Ditchling, Dr Konrad qualified from Munich University in 2003 and has worked in Crawley and Huntingdon before completing her GP Vocational Training Scheme in Brighton. She has since worked as a locum and as a GP Partner in Goring prior to joining Mid Sussex Health Care. She is especially interested in family planning and palliative care having provided out of hours cover for the Martlets Hospice over the last few years. She enjoys the variety of General Practice and is looking forward to getting to know her patients locally. She is married to Adam and has three children. She likes going on walks and spending time outside with her family. When not at work or looking after her children, she loves sewing clothes, mountain biking and playing badminton.

Dr Clare Nelson

MBBS (London 1999) MRCGP DFSRH (GP Partner)

Based in Hurstpierpoint, Clare trained at St Georges Hospital, Tooting and qualified in 1999. She spent a year working in Australia before moving back to the UK where she did her GP training with the Mid Sussex and then Chichester GP VTS programmes. She joined MSHC in July 2010 as a salaried GP working from Ditchling after returning to the area with her twins and husband who is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine. She greatly enjoys her work as a family doctor and the continuity she now has with patients. Clare changed her role from salaried GP in Ditchling to a Partner based in Hurstpierpoint in January 2018.

Dr Isabel Darbyshire

MBChB MRCGP DRCOG, Salaried GP

Based at Hassocks, Dr Isabel Darbyshire qualified from Manchester University Medical School in 2008, and completed her GP training on the Brighton and Mid Sussex scheme in 2014. After qualifying as a GP she worked as a locum in the local area before settling as a salaried GP in Hassocks in November 2017. Isabel enjoys all aspects of General Practice. She lives locally with her husband and three young children who keep her busy. She enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, baking and relaxing. Dr Darbyshire works Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in Hassocks.

Nurse Practitioners

Vanessa Needham

Vanessa Needham is our Lead Nurse and is clinical lead for the whole nursing team and a member of the practice's management team. “I've been nursing since 1987, lived in the West Country for the last 23 years but have now returned home to Sussex, where I grew up. I like all aspects of general practice with a special interest in respiratory medicine and family planning”.

Nurses

Our Practice Nurses provide the following services from all three of our sites: They take blood samples, perform ECG's, dressings, suture removal, childhood immunisations, cervical smears and blood pressure monitoring, ear syringing, injections, catheter care, assessment of leg ulcers, they give smoking cessation advice, travel immunisation advice. Ronna and Vanessa can also see patients for thier contraceptive needs to include repeat contraceptive pill, change of contraceptive pill and those wishing to start oral contraception. When booking an appointment to see one of our nurses, you may be asked what the appointment is for. This is to ensure that we book you with the correct nurse for the service required and allocate sufficient time for you to be cared for.

Phlebotomists

The practice currently has three Phlebotomists working across the three sites. Our Phlebotomists are trained to take blood from patients and to perform ECG's. Appointments are made at the request of a doctor and appointments for blood tests are held during morning surgery to enable the samples to reach the pathology department for testing.

Denise Simpson-Banks

Practice Manager

Denise manages all business/operational aspects of the practice. Her office is based at the Hurstpierpoint Health Centre but she will be happy to meet with you at any of the surgeries if you prefer.

Community/District Nurses

Many patients of the Practice are visited by Community/District Nurses that are employed by Sussex Community Trust (they are not part of the Practice team). Some of these nurses use our Hurstpierpoint surgery as a base, and our Practice Nurses and GPs liaise with them on a daily basis to share information relevant to patient care, but compliments, concerns and complaints regarding the District Nurses cannot be dealt with by the Practice Manager and should instead be referred to: Service Experience Team (Telephone: 01273 242292) Sussex Community Trust, Freepost BR117, Elm Grove, Brighton, BN2 3EW.
